Finance Minister urges greater Canadian investment in Pakistan’s energy and technology sectors

Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb on Friday highlighted the need to expand trade with Canada, noting that current trade volumes remain below potential. He invited Canadian investment in Pakistan’s renewable energy, mining, and technology sectors.

The finance minister made the remarks during a meeting with the newly appointed High Commissioner of Canada, Tarik Ali Khan, at the Finance Division.

Aurangzeb underscored the importance of enhancing formal remittance channels for the Pakistani diaspora in Canada, terming it a key link between both economies.

He briefed the envoy on Pakistan’s recent economic performance and reform measures, stating that the country’s macroeconomic indicators have improved following a period of instability, with inflation contained and fiscal discipline restored.

The minister reaffirmed the government’s focus on structural reforms, privatisation of state-owned enterprises, and private sector-led growth as part of its economic recovery strategy.

He also discussed Pakistan’s engagement with international financial institutions and development partners, noting efforts to attract foreign direct investment in key sectors including energy, infrastructure, and minerals.

Aurangzeb said that Canada’s involvement in projects such as the Reko Diq mine demonstrates the growing potential for stronger bilateral economic cooperation.
