ISLAMABAD: The National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) has approved a Rs0.3504 per unit increase in electricity tariff under the quarterly adjustment mechanism, placing approximately an additional financial burden of Rs8.67 billion on consumers across the country.
According to the regulator’s decision for the October–December 2025 quarter, the increase will be recovered over a three-month period from March to May 2026. The authority stated that the “instant quarterly adjustment of positive Rs.0.3504/kWh shall be charged from the consumers… to be recovered in a period of 03 months i.e. March 2026 to May 2026.”
The hike will apply nationwide, including consumers of K-Electric, with certain exceptions. NEPRA clarified in its order that the adjustment “shall also be charged from the consumers of K-Electric except life line, Incremental consumption package billed units and prepaid consumers.”
The regulator further explained that in case bills for the applicable period have already been issued prior to the notification of the decision, “the same may be applied in subsequent month,” allowing power distribution companies to recover the amount in later billing cycles.
In its directives to Ex-WAPDA Distribution Companies (XWDISCOs), NEPRA emphasized strict compliance with judicial orders, stating that “while effecting the quarterly adjustments, the concerned XWDISCOs shall keep in view and strictly comply with the orders of the courts notwithstanding this order.”
The authority also directed all distribution companies to ensure timely submission of quarterly adjustment requests immediately after the close of each quarter. Additionally, they have been instructed to provide “category wise detail of increase/decrease in sales of each quarter, over reference sales as well as actual sales of corresponding period of previous year.” For industrial consumers, separate data for categories E1, B2, B3, and B4 must be presented along with analysis of sales and Maximum Demand Indicator (MDI) variance to better explain the impact on adjustment amounts in future hearings.
NEPRA has intimated the Federal Government prior to notification of the decision in the Official Gazette in terms of Section 31(7) of the NEPRA Act.
This marks the second quarterly adjustment increase in the ongoing fiscal year. In the first quarter (July–September 2025), electricity tariff had been raised by Rs0.33 per unit, which was recovered from consumers between December 2025 and February 2026 — signaling continued upward pressure on power tariffs amid sectoral cost challenges.
