Govt warns of fuel supply risks, urges nationwide conservation measures

The government on Thursday called on citizens to conserve fuel, warning that ongoing regional tensions could disrupt petroleum supplies in the coming days despite current stock levels remaining sufficient.

The appeal came after a high-level meeting chaired by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif to review fuel availability and the implementation of austerity measures introduced in response to global oil market volatility.

Officials informed the meeting that Pakistan currently maintains adequate petroleum stocks to meet demand, with additional cargoes being arranged. However, authorities cautioned that the evolving situation in the Middle East could pose risks to supply chains, requiring proactive conservation efforts.

Sharif directed all relevant departments to prepare a comprehensive contingency plan in coordination with provincial governments to manage any potential emergency. He also ordered continuous monitoring of fuel stocks and supply conditions.

The meeting reviewed the implementation of austerity measures announced last week following the escalation of the US-Israel conflict involving Iran. These include a 50% reduction in fuel allowances for official vehicles, a four-day work week, and a work-from-home policy for 50% of public sector employees, excluding essential services.

Participants were told that compliance with these measures is being monitored, with the Intelligence Bureau tasked with auditing implementation and submitting a report.

The government urged the public to adopt fuel-saving practices such as carpooling and avoiding unnecessary travel, while calling on affluent segments to lead by example in observing austerity.

Officials said the overall situation is under close watch, with detailed tracking of petroleum stocks in place to detect irregularities and ensure timely corrective action.

Senior civil and military leadership attended the meeting, including Chief of Army Staff Field Marshal Asim Munir, National Security Adviser Lt Gen Asim Malik, and federal ministers.
