How the local rate compares with the international price
The Association quoted international gold at $3,995 per ounce. At the State Bank’s recent average rate of Rs 277.01 to the dollar, that equals about Rs 414,995 per tola. The Association’s 24 karat rate of Rs 422,036 is 1.7 percent above that figure. The gap is the local premium over the international price.
Gold and silver compared
One ounce of gold bought 74 ounces of silver at the international prices the Association quoted ($3,995 gold and $53.80 silver per ounce). In Pakistani rates, one tola of 24 karat gold equals 72 tolas of silver. The two ratios are close because both local rates follow the international price. Traders watch the ratio to see which metal is moving more.
Tola, gram and karat explained
One tola is 11.6638 grams, so a tola is a little more than 11 and a half grams. An ounce is 31.1035 grams, which is how the international price is quoted. Karat measures purity: 24 karat is pure gold, 22 karat is 22 parts in 24 (91.7 percent), 21 karat is 87.5 percent and 18 karat is 75 percent.
Why the price in a shop is higher
The rate above is for the metal. A jeweller adds making charges, wastage and their own margin when they sell you jewellery, and rates for coins and bars can differ. Ask for the rate and the charges separately before you buy, and check the weight and karat on the bill.
