The government’s nisab for bank deductions
The government fixes a separate figure once a year for deducting zakat at source from bank deposits. For Ramadan 2026 (1447 AH) it set the nisab at Rs 503,529, in a notification dated 16 February 2026 from the Ministry of Poverty Alleviation and Social Safety. In 2025 the figure was Rs 179,689. Banks deduct zakat from savings and similar deposit accounts whose balance is at or above the nisab on the first day of Ramadan. Accounts below it are exempt.
That figure is for the bank deduction only and is fixed for the year. It is not the same as your own zakat calculation above, which uses today’s gold and silver rates and all your wealth. The reports say the rise from 2025 reflects the large increase in gold and silver prices.
How zakat is calculated
- Add up your zakatable wealth: gold and silver (by weight and purity), cash, savings, business stock, money owed to you that you expect back, and investments held for trading.
- Subtract debts you owe now.
- Compare the result with the nisab. If it is lower, no zakat is due.
- If it is at or above the nisab and you have held it for a full lunar year, zakat is 2.5 percent of the net amount.
Which nisab should I use?
Gold and silver give very different nisab values, because one tola of gold costs many times more than one tola of silver. Hanafi fatwa sources say that cash is counted against the silver nisab, and that when someone holds both gold and silver, the nisab that benefits the poor more, which is the lower silver figure, is the one used. They also say that gold and silver below their own thresholds are added together and not counted separately. Scholars differ, so the calculator lets you choose, and you should ask your own scholar which to follow.

Questions
What is the zakat rate?
Zakat is 2.5 percent of net zakatable wealth that has reached the nisab and been held for a full lunar year.
Is zakat due on gold jewellery that is worn?
According to the Hanafi position, zakat is due on gold jewellery even when it is worn regularly, once your total zakatable wealth reaches the nisab. Other scholars hold different views, so ask a scholar if this applies to you.
Does the bank’s zakat deduction cover my zakat?
The bank deduction applies to deposit accounts on the first day of Ramadan, using the government’s nisab. Your total wealth can include gold, silver, stock and other assets that the bank deduction does not touch. This calculator is for working out your own zakat across all of it, and a scholar can advise on how the two fit together.
