A 40-year-old school teacher in Daejeon, South Korea, arrested for stabbing an 8-year-old girl to death in an incident across the country. The incident has left the nation aghast.
Police Investigation Resumes
Reports from foreign media confirmed that local police had said the perpetrator confessed. The suspect is receiving treatment for injuries she inflicted on herself.
The Teacher’s Mental State and Employment History
The teacher reportedly sent in a request for a six-month leave based on a depression diagnosis on December 9, 2022. However, she returned to teaching 20 days later after having been medically cleared to do so.
Government Inquiry Ordered
Acting President of Korea Choi Sang-mok has thereafter ordered a comprehensive investigation into the circumstances of the tragedy and the mental evaluation procedures of teachers and safety regulations in schools.
Investigations are currently ongoing as to whether there were preventive measures against similar massacres.
