Massive price hikes persist as vendors flout official rates without accountability from local authorities.
LAHORE: Lahore’s residents are grappling with skyrocketing prices for essential food items, with seasonal vegetables, fruits, and chicken becoming increasingly unaffordable. Vendors have been openly flouting official price lists, with no visible enforcement from local authorities to curb the situation.
Live chicken prices have surged by Rs25 per kg, now set at Rs379-393 per kg, but are being sold at much higher prices, ranging from Rs530-640 per kg. Boneless chicken has seen an even steeper increase, reaching Rs900-1000 per kg. Similarly, staple vegetables such as potatoes, tomatoes, and onions are now priced well above official rates. Potatoes, for instance, are being sold for Rs80-100 per kg, though they should be priced at Rs40-45 per kg.
The situation is exacerbated by the apparent lack of action from the district administration, which has allowed vendors to charge whatever prices they see fit. With no significant enforcement of official prices, local residents have no choice but to pay inflated costs for everyday essentials, with some even forced to purchase water at unreasonable prices.
