National Assembly Standing Committee discusses Lyari Expressway and flood damages

ISLAMABAD: The National Assembly (NA) Standing Committee on Economic Affairs Division, chaired by Dr. Mirza Ikhtiar Baig, met on Friday to review the progress of key infrastructure projects and the aftermath of the 2025 floods.

The committee was briefed on the Lyari Expressway Corridor, which begins at ICI Chowk and extends to Sohrab Goth, covering a distance of approximately 16 kilometers from the existing toll plaza on the M-9 Motorway. The newly constructed M-10 Motorway also starts from ICI Chowk, passing through several key areas, including Gulbai Flyover, Shershah Flyover, Hub Chowk, and Madinat-ul-Hikmat, before connecting to the M-6 Motorway near Hyderabad.

Regarding the inclusion of the project in the Public Sector Development Program (PSDP), the committee was informed that Karachi Port Trust (KPT), in collaboration with EXIM, is conducting studies on the Lyari Elevated Freight Corridor (LEFC). The Ministry of Communication and NHA representatives suggested that KPT could complete the studies and initiate the project for inclusion in the PSDP next year.

The committee was also briefed on the severe impact of the 2025 floods, which were caused by nine monsoon spells between June 26 and September 19, 2025. The floods resulted in 1,006 deaths and 1,063 injuries nationwide, with the highest casualties reported in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (504 deaths, 218 injuries) and Punjab (304 deaths, 661 injuries).

The damage to infrastructure included the destruction of 1,981 kilometers of roads, 239 bridges, and 12,569 houses. Additionally, 6,509 livestock were reported perished. In response to the crisis, 949 relief camps were established, housing 152,252 people, and 741 medical camps provided health services to 662,098 individuals across various provinces.

The meeting was attended by Members of the National Assembly, including Ammar Ahmad Khan Leghari, Pir Syed Fazal Ali Shah Jillani, Muhammad Khan Daha, Ms. Akhtar Bibi, Syeda Shehla Raza, Ms. Neelam, and Sadiq Iftikhar, along with officials from the Ministry of Economic Affairs, Secretary EAD, and other concerned departments.
