The Senate Standing Committee on National Food Security and Research on Thursday reprimanded the Ministry of National Food Security and Research for shortcomings in performance, underlining the need for stronger oversight of food safety, agricultural research and related projects.
During the session, chaired by Senator Syed Masroor Ahsan, the committee reviewed the functioning of the National Agri-Trade and Food Safety Authority (NAFSA) and examined progress on several initiatives of the Pakistan Agricultural Research Council (PARC).
Members expressed dissatisfaction with the implementation of food safety measures and stressed the importance of enhancing the capacity of relevant institutions to meet national and international standards. They called for accelerated action in strengthening and accrediting laboratories tasked with upholding food quality and safety protocols.
The committee also endorsed Public Sector Development Programme (PSDP) projects, including the regularisation of the initiative aimed at strengthening and upgrading the agriculture and livestock research system at the Arid Zone Research Institute in Umerkot. It urged that such research work be aligned more closely with practical agricultural needs.
Lawmakers emphasised the significance of preserving indigenous livestock breeds, highlighting concerns over the future of native goat and cattle varieties and urging targeted conservation efforts.
In addition, the panel reviewed a project focused on developing high-value camel milk powder aimed at increasing foreign exchange earnings and improving livelihoods in arid regions. While appreciating the initiative, the committee recommended that the project be expanded to other provinces, particularly Balochistan and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, where camel populations are significant.
The oversight session further sought briefings on the implementation status of initiatives designed to enhance agricultural productivity and competitiveness, with the committee pressing for clear timelines and accountability mechanisms to ensure effective outcomes.
Committee members reiterated the need for stronger coordination between the ministry, research institutions and regulatory authorities to bolster Pakistan’s food security framework and support sustainable agricultural development.
