Family sources confirm that ex-Supreme Court judge Azmat Saeed Sheikh died in Lahore after a long illness. He had been under treatment at the hospital for some time prior to his death.
Career and Judicial Service
Justice (Retd.) Azmat Saeed Sheikh served as a Supreme Court judge from 2012 to 2019. Before his elevation to the Supreme Court, he was Chief Justice of the Lahore High Court.
Among some of the remembers of his judicial career is his being part of the bench in the Panama Leaks case- one of the most landmark decisions in Pakistan’s legal and political history.
Early Legal Career and Notable Contributions
Azmat Saeed began practicing law in Rawalpindi in 1978 after completing an LLB. He initially picked up experience working in various law chambers before setting up his own legal practice in Lahore in 1980. He became a lawyer in 1981 in the Lahore High Court and the Supreme Court of Pakistan.
He was sworn in on June 1, 2012, as a permanent judge of the Supreme Court of Pakistan, in a ceremony administered by then Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry.
Acting Chief Justice and Legacy
In July 2019, Justice (Retd.) Azmat Saeed Sheikh acted for a short period as Acting Chief Justice of Pakistan.
