Lahore: Former Foreign Minister and PTI Vice Chairman Shah Mahmood Qureshi was moved from Kot Lakhpat Jail to the Punjab Institute of Cardiology (PIC) on Saturday after experiencing chest pain, his son and legal counsel confirmed.
Qureshi, who has been in custody since August 2023 facing multiple charges related to the May 9, 2023 riots, felt discomfort early Saturday morning following Fajr prayers. Prison doctors conducted an initial examination before arranging his transfer to PIC by Rescue 1122 due to his deteriorating condition.
In a post on X, his son Zain Qureshi urged the public to pray for his father’s speedy recovery and shared that doctors plan to keep him under observation for several days.
Advocate Rana Mudassar, Qureshi’s lawyer, stated that the former minister is currently undergoing various tests at the hospital. The family has been kept informed about his health status.
Earlier, in July 2024, Qureshi was indicted by a Lahore anti-terrorism court in connection with an incident involving an alleged attack on and burning of a police station. At that time, he was transferred from Adiala Jail in Rawalpindi to Kot Lakhpat Jail in Lahore to ease logistical challenges related to his frequent transportation.
In November 2023, Qureshi and other senior PTI leaders faced multiple indictments linked to the May 9 riots. The former foreign minister has pleaded not guilty to all charges.
