Tokyo: With snowfall reaching record levels in the last couple of weeks, reports say parts of Japan are under 12 feet of snow.
Adverse Weather
The Japan Meteorological Agency has issued heavy snowfall warnings for Ishikawa prefecture and avalanche warnings in Niigata, where three meters of snow fell in mere days. Roads, buildings, and vehicles are covered with snow, rendering the coastal areas virtually inaccessible.
Transport and Power Disruptions
Snowstorms have wreaked havoc in commerce, stranding vehicles on the highways, postponements of flights, halting of train services, and power outages in badly affected regions.
Threat to Weak Houses
In Wajima, in the last six hours, snow reached an all-time record of 27 cm. Having barely recovered from the earthquake on January 1 and the heavy rains last year, this region is now looking at a fresh assault.
Forecast
The winter pressure pattern will last through Sunday, and increased inflow of cold air would increase snowfall in certain areas.
