Workplace Harassment Defined by Supreme Court
ISLAMABAD: Justice Mansoor Ali Shah, senior judge of Pakistan’s Supreme Court, today commented on workplace harassment being a global issue holding the judgment in a case of harassment.
Harassment Case in Which Appeal Has Been Rejected
In the harassment case, the Supreme Court of Pakistan rejected an appeal preferred by driver Muhammad Deen against the ruling of the Lahore High Court. This was after a lady doctor had given a complaint of harassment at the workplace against the driver, prompting his forced retirement, a decision also supported by the Governor of Punjab and confirmed by the Lahore High Court.
Gender Gap in Workplace Harassment
Justice Shah pointed out that millions are subjected to workplace harassment worldwide; however, the male and female ratios would not be equal regarding the two groups, the women suffering a great deal more. Also, he indicated Pakistan’s most poor ranking-145th out of 146-in 2024 Global Gender Gap Index.
Precedent by the US Supreme Court
The judge mentioned a United States Supreme Court judgment that recognized a hostile environment for hostage situations as a type of harassment to further ensure and demand protections of the workplace.
