Temporary appointments made to ensure uninterrupted services at teaching hospitals during Young Doctors Association strike.
LAHORE: In response to the ongoing strike by the Young Doctors Association (YDA), the Punjab health department has recruited 450 doctors on a temporary (locum) basis to work in public teaching hospitals across the province, including those in Lahore. The move aims to address staffing shortages and ensure the continuity of healthcare services during the disruption.
The new appointments include 25 senior registrars/consultants, along with a mix of male and female medical officers. Under the locum scheme, senior registrars/consultants will receive Rs10,000 per shift, while medical officers and women medical officers will be paid Rs8,000 per shift. Despite the large number of applicants, the recruitment highlights the significant number of qualified doctors still unemployed in Punjab. The appointments are set to last for one month, with the possibility of extensions, though they do not offer a pathway to permanent employment.
