WASHINGTON — US President Donald Trump once again asserted his role in defusing tensions between Pakistan and India, claiming he “settled” the recent cross-border ceasefire by leveraging trade discussions during a meeting with South African President Cyril Ramaphosa.
Trump highlighted ongoing trade deals with both countries and recounted questioning their leaders about the escalating conflict following India’s “Operation Sindoor,” which led to retaliatory firing from Pakistan.
Describing the situation as worsening rapidly, Trump said, “We spoke to them, and I think we… got it settled,” though he noted that shortly after, both sides blamed him when fresh clashes occurred.
While Pakistan has acknowledged and thanked Trump for his involvement, India has remained silent on the US president’s claims. Trump praised the leadership of both nations, calling Pakistan’s leaders “excellent” and referring to Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi as “my friend,” a sentiment echoed by Ramaphosa.
The ceasefire’s durability remains uncertain as official confirmation of Trump’s mediation from New Delhi has yet to surface.
